GOVERNMENTS WORLDWIDE INCREASE CCTV
Governments across the world are earmarking significant funds for some of the largest ever IT security initiatives according to Siemon, a global leader in network cabling. The growing trend is due, in part, to new applications such as Internet Protocol (IP)-based closed-circuit television (CCTV) and video surveillance.
Security threats are seemingly everywhere. New developments such as Video on Demand (VoD), digitized video, interactive video, streaming video, and real-time audio/video are opening up security opportunities for government applications in ways that were just not possible a year or two ago. In contrast with earlier technology, Video over IP transmissions are scaleable, cost effective, and very flexible because they allow video signals to be captured, digitized, streamed and managed over IP networks.
Equipment advances are also contributing to a significant increase in IP video capability. New IP cameras provide PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) capabilities and, in some instances, are powered via the data cable using the new IEEE 802.3ak power over Ethernet standard. The plug and play approach allows IP addressable cameras to be placed anywhere on the existing cabling infrastructure. Electronics and cabling systems that are already handling IP traffic now become an integral part of the surveillance system. As the videos are stored in a digital format, they can be viewed anywhere on the network. Video imaging can also be viewed simultaneously from multiple points on the network and the need for costly site specific monitoring equipment is eliminated.
IP-based CCTV is offering government a myriad of new applications, such as in today's courtrooms to allow live video feeds in real-time - eliminating the need to move prisoners to the courtroom. These better performing technologies protect not only government assets and security, but also those working in these environments. Real time simulation is in use today allowing pilots and captains to "virtually" perform military missions prior to execution. This technology relies heavily on live surveillance and was not possible a few years ago. With the ability to move images anywhere in the world connected via secure networks, we are only beginning to take advantage of applications that will assure safety for our public personnel and private citizens.
